Tobacco lighters are just one of the many smoking accessories sold on the market today. What's in a Lighter?

A typical lighter is fueled by liquid butane, which is stored in a pressurized chamber. It is released by pressing down on a button, letting the butane return to its gaseous state. Typically, the gas is then ignited by a spark, producing a flame. This is produced either by means of a hammer hitting a piezo crystal (creating an effect similar to a car's spark plug) or by a serrated steel wheel that strikes against a flint when rotated.

Butane Lighters

Butane lighters typically produce flame with a flint-type ignition. While these are the cheapest kinds of lighters, most being disposable, there are some brands of butane lighters that are refillable. These lighters produce a soft flame that can easily be blown out, but are ideal for lighting cigarettes, and are very cost-effective.

Some lighters, such as those produced by Clipper, are considered highly collectable because of their trendy designs.

Torch Lighters

Torch lighters create a straight and much hotter flame than ordinary lighters, and are ideal for evenly lighting cigars with large ring gauges. They are wind-resistant and produce a precise flame. Some types produce two or even three jets of flame at once, making lighting large cigars even easier.

When you are lighting cigars with this type of lighter, it should be handled with care. The ignition chamber must be kept as clean as possible to prevent it from malfunctioning. Do not put your cigar or cigarette directly into the burning vapor. Instead, hold it about an inch away to prevent ashes from falling into the lighter.
