CAO Gold Corona Gorda

Cigar Reviews

CAO is one of the best known names in the cigar trade worldwide. Founded by Cano A. Ozgener (from whose initials the company derives its name), CAO began by crafting pipes and humidors along with cigars. Eventually they chose to narrow their focus to the creation of their superb cigars. It was a bumpy road at first but over time they have come to be one of the most respected brands in the industry.

The CAO Gold Corona Gorda is a light cigar that will be loved by those who enjoy light smokes, but may also have something to enjoy smokers who usually go for a cigar that’s more intensely flavored. Despite its subtlety, the CAO Gold offers a very full experience as far as flavors and aromas go. The filler comes from Nicaragua. In the hills nearby the tobacco fields where the filler is grown is a gold deposit for which the cigar is named. Visually the name is also reflected in the pale color of the flawless Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper. The recognizable red, gold and black band completes the striking appearance.

The draw on this stick is just right and the burn is fairly consistent through a full hour long duration. The ash is tight and fine, dropping off only when it’s time and not before. Where some lighter cigars lack in flavor, the CAO Gold offers the smoker a very distinctive set of notes. In the beginning it has a toasted nutty, woody flavor accompanied by something in the mocha vein. Halfway through the smoke, the flavors take a turn into light, creamy vanilla. The notes are subtle but extremely well blended and balanced.

Priced at $5-6, the CAO Gold Corona Gorda is a light but complex cigar with a memorable, creamy flavor and a subtle personality.
