Dunhill Altamira Tubo

Cigar Reviews Dunhill

Dunhill was founded by Alfred Dunhill of London in 1982.  The brand is famous for having been the favourite tobacconist of King George VI and Sir Winston Churchill.  Folklore describes how during the London Blitz when the Dunhill shop on Jermyn Street was destroyed, employees phoned Winston Churchill in the dead of night to inform him that his own private cigar stash was intact.  Is there truth to the legend?  No one is sure, but what is sure is that Dunhill’s famous cigar line continues to impress with offerings like the Altamira Tubo.

The Dunhill Altamira Tubo features Piloto, Cubano, and Olor tobaccos from the Cibao Valley in the Dominican Republic encased in a smooth Natural Connecticut Shade wrapper.  This mild-strength cigar comes packaged in individual tubes to preserve freshness.  The average price for the Altamira Tubo is around $9.00 a stick.

This is a beautifully constructed cigar which is perfect when you want something lighter to smoke.  It would also make an excellent introductory choice for a beginner.  Without overwhelming the smoker in the slightest, this cigar conveys everything that is pleasant and enjoyable about smoking.  The burn is perfect and the draw is smooth; the notes are mostly leather and cedar without a lot of variation.

This is a very consistent smoke which doesn’t pack a lot of surprises, but then, it doesn’t have to.  It’s a fairly predictable experience, but what you can predict is excellence.  When you smoke a Dunhill Altamira Tubo, you enjoy the same luxurious smoothness which has drawn so many notable patrons to the brand throughout history.  The Altamira Tubo is a very relaxing smoke which is ideal for unwinding after a long day.  At $9.00 a stick, there are perhaps cheaper cigars, but for such a great smoke this is an equally great value.
