Proper Ways to Store Your Smoking Pipes

Pipe How To's pipe smokers pipes storage tips

Pipe smokers should endeavor to have a good storage space. The container you choose will depend on how long it will be before using the stored pipes. However, before you pick a container, you need to understand tobacco storage.

Storage tips

Moisture content of your tobacco may affect its smoke as well as taste. If it is too dry or too wet, it will not have a pleasant smoke. Therefore, you need to put it in a sealed container away from sunlight. Do not put your pipes in a cigar humidor or refrigerator. In a refrigerator, the tobacco will absorb foreign material flavors, thereby changing its taste. In a cigar humidor, the stored tobacco will absorb excess moisture, and possibly develop molds.

Rejuvenate dried tobacco

Dried tobacco can be reconditioned. Lay the dried tobacco on a piece of paper and spray water on it. Mix it well and store it in a sealed container for one day. Contrary to what you may have heard, adding a piece of orange, apple or any other fruit will change the tobacco flavor.

Storage pouches

Tobacco pouches are of different sizes and materials. You will possibly find leather, cloth and plastic pocket-size pouches. These pouches are designed to be used for a day or two before refilling. However, they are meant for short-term storage.

For a few months

Storing tobacco in pipe humidors is ideal for short-term storage. The humidors include a humidifier that maintains moisture content. The pipe can be made of ceramic, metal, wood, and glass with a non-absorbent cork.

Long-term storage

Unopened metal tins or re-sealable plastic tins are used for long-term storage. In case you opt for the Ziploc bags, ensure you squeeze air out before storing. Thereafter, you need to pick an ideal storage location. It should be dark, cool and dry. Some tobacco types, for starters, English and natural types, change for the better with time. Aromatic tobacco seems to change for the worse over time. However, all tobacco stored under these ideal conditions can remain in good condition for not less than one year.

Ideal storage for your tobacco is important. Ensure you obtain containers for short-term as well as long-term storage. Above all, keep your tobacco in a cool, dry and dark place.
