Frequently Asked Questions
How big is a large humidor?
In general, our large humidors begin at 100 count (meaning they hold 100 cigars), and go up to 300 count.
How do I season a Large Humidor?
Seasoning your large humidor is the first step in protecting your cigars and the humidor itself. Spanish cedar wood is the most common type used in humidors as a liner, though it is not truly a cedar but a hardwood. Using actual cedar in a humidor can be poisonous. Spanish cedar is the best lining for most humidor seasoning needs.
Since wood absorbs moisture, preparing the humidor before you place your cigars within is essential.
- If your large humidor does not come with one purchase and use a hygrometer with it.
- Fill a small bowl or dish with distilled water.
- Place the distilled water and dish within your new humidor before placing any cigars.
- Next, set your hygrometer on the bowl and close the humidor lid.
- Allow the humidor to sit unopened and undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours to stabilize levels before adding cigars.
- Keep in mind that different types and brands of cigars may need different humidity levels, so always check the brand's instructions.
What is the best way to clean a large humidor?
The first step is to read and consult your humidor's manual, should it come with one. There are several methods to cleaning a humidor; you may pick any of the ones listed below.
- - Remove cigars before cleaning and store them in an airtight container during the cleaning.
- - Dampen a clean, lint-free, soft cloth or sponge in distilled water. The fabric mustn't be dripping or soaked, as you do not want to drip or spill water within the humidor. Always avoid tap water, as it can leave stains and mineral deposits. Gently wipe down the humidor with a cloth dampened with distilled water.
Cigar Plume or Mold?
- - Does it look like your humidor may be molding? Or is it a plume? Cigar plumes are small, white dots on a cigar's wrapper's surface. Plume is 100% harmless and a sign that your cigars are aging correctly. Plumes can be brushed gently with a soft brush from the cigar before smoking. Cigar mold, on the other hand, is green or blue and can form on the wrappers and at the foot of a cigar and will not brush off. Mold has a sticky, pasty texture and can emit a noticeable musty odor. Before attempting to clean a moldy humidor, you should take the time to consider if you want to go through with trying to clean it yourself or simply purchase a new one. It may be easier to buy a new one.
- - Acrylic Humidors: You may be able to scrub this humidor material thoroughly or even run it through a dishwasher. It is easier to remove mold in plastic environments than in wood boxes.
Wood Humidor Mold Tips:
- - Remove cigars.
- - Separate moldy from non-moldy.
- - Sanitizing a wood and cedar humidor will take weeks, not days, so you will want to store cigars in a humidor bag, ziplock, or airtight container in a cool, dark place.
- - Toss all moldy cigars.
- - Discard whichever device you were using to humidify the inside and replace it.
- - Vacuum the inside thoroughly to remove any loose bits of tobacco and mold.
- - Sand the inside of your humidor to #150 extra-fine frit. If mold has penetrated deep into the thin cedar wood of the box, we recommend replacement.
- - Sterilize the inside with isopropyl alcohol, using a clean, lint-free cloth, using a small amount. Don't saturate; use just enough to dab the surface to wet it. The alcohol will work to clean any leftover mold spores you cannot see.
- - Wipe the interior down next with steamed, distilled water. This will dilute any leftover alcohol that has seeped into the box. Open the humidor and let it dry out completely for 24-48 hours.
- - Re-season and humidify your humidor precisely as you did when it was brand new.
- - Allow the humidor to sit empty with the distilled water or a humidifier of your choice for two weeks, checking constantly. If the mold does not return, you may return your cigars to the humidifier. If you have done all of these steps and the mold returns, you will need to purchase a new one. "
