So, let’s say that you go to light up your cigar, expecting a delicious and smooth smoke, and yet, something is just…off.  The flavor is a little strange, the draw isn’t what you expected it to be, and overall, you’re just not feeling satisfied whatsoever.

As you know, cigars can be a bit more temperamental than we’d like them to be.  After all, how many other personal items need to be kept in humidors in order to last throughout a few weeks?

There are other conditions that can negatively impact your stogies as well, and temperature is one of them.  Today, we’ll be talking about what happens when it gets hot.

Can a Cigar Get Too Hot?

Yes, cigars can most definitely get too hot.  Cigars are composed of organic substances that don’t respond well to extreme temperatures, changes in humidity or other extreme factors.  Intense heat is capable of changing the chemical properties of your cigar, resulting in an experience that’s not satisfying.

What Happens When a Stogie Overheats?

Heat, as we know, changes the properties of organic substances on a molecular level.  After all, this is why cooked food tastes different from raw food.  And, when it comes to cigars, extreme heat changes the flavor of your tobacco.

When you go to smoke a cigar that’s been exposed to too much heat, you’ll likely notice a very bitter flavor and aroma.  Right away, you’ll likely find this off-putting.  Additionally, the draw will usually be unpleasantly tight.

What Causes This to Happen?

There are a few reasons why a cigar can get too hot.  One is that it’s simply been exposed to hot outdoor temperatures for too long a period of time.  Temperatures above 90 degrees can certainly alter the chemical properties of your tobacco, leaving a bitter taste and a change in texture that interferes with your ability to smoke.

Both leaving your cigar outside for too long and exposing it to a sudden, extreme change in temperature can cause this to happen.  But, there are other factors that can cause a cigar to overheat and change its properties as well.

One thing is puffing too quickly.  Puffing too quickly causes too much heat from the lit part to enter into the rest of the tobacco.  Little by little, this overheats the tobacco inside of your cigar.

Another thing is over-lighting your cigar.  If you continuously light your cigar long after it’s been lit properly, you’re basically frying that tobacco which will result in a poor flavor and an unpleasant draw.

How Can a Smoker Prevent Their Cigar from Overheating?

Always be mindful of the temperature when it comes to where you keep your cigars.  Never leave your cigars outside during the hot days of summer.  And, always try to light each one properly and avoid puffing too hard or too frequently.  By keeping all of these things in mind, you should avoid overheating your stogie.

Don’t Let Your Cigar Get Too Hot!

Cigars can indeed overheat, and that can absolutely ruin your smoking experience.  But the good news is that there are very specific reasons why this happens, and very simple ways to prevent it form occurring.  Follow this guide to ensure that your cigars stay in great shape without getting exposed to high temperatures that can damage the tobacco.
