How to Prepare and Smoke Plug Tobacco

Plug Tobacco

Plug tobacco is mostly associated with chewing, but many people ask us if it can be smoked.  We will be answering that question and giving you some helpful advice in regard to how to get the most out of this product.

What is Plug Tobacco?

Plug tobacco is essentially chewing tobacco.  It comes in a pressed square, which is extremely dense with tobacco leaves, and looks a lot like a dark brick.  When a person wishes to chew some of it, they simply break a piece off and stick it into their mouth.

Plug tobacco has fallen in popularity over the years, which means that it’s not as easy to find as it once was.  But there is a growing interest in using this product for smoking, most often in a pipe.

So, why would someone want to smoke plug tobacco, when there are so many wonderful pipe tobaccos available on the market?  Well, for one thing, the condensed nature of it offers some unique qualities that many smokers enjoy.  Furthermore, the process of creating it can lead to a richer and fuller flavor that offers an experience that you just can’t get with loose tobacco.

Can You Smoke Plug Tobacco?

Of course, the question is, can you technically smoke plug tobacco?  The answer is yes.  Many people do, although it requires some work, which can be intimidating to beginners.  That’s why we’re going to discuss the proper process today.

Properly Preparing and Smoking Plug Tobacco

Plug tobacco may look like concrete to the inexperienced eye, but it’s actually fairly easy to slice or flake into small pieces.  And that’s exactly what you’ll need to do if you plan on smoking it in a pipe.  Flaking it and slicing it produce basically the same effect, except flaking it may offer more airflow and more freedom when it comes to how you pack your pipe.

If you wish to flake it, we recommend using a handheld vegetable peeler, as this allows you to produce the perfect flakes.  You can also use a razor blade if you don’t have a vegetable peeler available.  You should find that it flakes pretty easily.

If you wish to slice it, you’ll have to use a sharp, non-serrated knife to do so.  This requires a bit more time and effort, because you want to make sure that the slices are thin and even and rushing through the process can stop this from happening.

Whichever method you choose, make sure that you carefully collect the broken up tobacco.  Small amounts left on the floor can be dangerous to children and pets.  Besides, you don’t want to waste your product.

Now, you can add it to your pipe.  Simply insert the flakes or slices into the pipe’s bowl and be careful not to exceed the rim.  This is where you’ll need to simple play around and allow trial and error to do its thing.  Packing it too tightly can interfere with flavor and prevent adequate airflow that allows the smoke to sustain itself.  Packing it too loosely can do the exact same thing.

Once you’ve packed it properly, however, you can go ahead and enjoy a smoking session unlike any other that you’ve had before.

Plug Tobacco Might Be Marketed Toward Chewing Enthusiasts

But at the end of the day, tobacco is tobacco.  If you wish to smoke plug tobacco in a pipe, you need to follow the process carefully so that you don’t end up wasting the product.  Before long you’ll be an expert at preparing and smoking plug tobacco, and can enjoy it whenever you’re in the mood for something different.
